“The Story of Mankind” is a 1921 work by Hendrik Willem van Loon that explores the origins of man, exploring when, how, and why civilisation, language, writing, art, etc. came into being. Contents include: “The Setting of the Stage”, “Our Earliest Ancestors”, “Prehistoric Man Begins to Make Things for Himself”, “The Egyptians Invent the Art of Writing and the Record of History Begins”, “The Beginning of Civilisation in the Valley of the Nile”, “The Rise and Fall of Egypt”, “Mesopotamia, the Second Centre of Eastern Civilisation”, etc. Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882 – 1944) was a Dutch-American journalist, historian, and successful author of children’s books. Other notable works by this author include: “The Story of Mankind” (1921), 'The Story of the Bible' (1923), and 'Witches and Witch-Finders' (1923). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive.
