As CHEBEL (M) said: 'Slavery is the most widespread human phenomenon in the world.' However, this universal attribute of slavery should not obscure the particularities of its practice and its conceptual use, both cultural and legal, which vary from one society to another, from one nation to another, and, in short, from one ethnic or racial group to another across Africa in terms of time and space. The term slavery (or slave) itself is not fixed. It is defined in time and space. In terms of time, we tend to distinguish between classical slavery, defined as slavery essentially involving the slave trade or the right of ownership and related rights exercised over the slave, and modern slavery, recognized in other forms, notably through extreme exploitation and domination in inhuman servile conditions as basic criteria. In terms of space, there is an international definition of conventional origin, for example: slavery is the state of a person who is under the absolute dependence of a master who has the possibility of using them as material property.
