The Sentimental Traveler

The Sentimental Traveler: Notes On Places is a travelogue written by Vernon Lee and originally published in 1908. The book is a collection of essays and observations on various places that Lee visited throughout her travels, including Italy, Germany, France, and England. Lee’s writing style is characterized by a strong emotional and personal connection to the places she visits, hence the title ''Sentimental Traveler''. She describes in detail the architecture, art, and culture of each location, but also delves into the feelings and emotions that these places evoke in her. The book is divided into chapters, each focusing on a different place. Lee’s descriptions are vivid and evocative, transporting the reader to each location and immersing them in the sights, sounds, and smells of each place. Throughout the book, Lee also reflects on the nature of travel itself and the role it plays in shaping our perceptions of the world. She discusses the idea of ''tourism'' and the commodification of travel, but also argues that true travel involves a deeper connection to the places we visit and a willingness to engage with the local culture. Overall, The Sentimental Traveler: Notes On Places is a rich and insightful travelogue that combines vivid descriptions of some of Europe’s most beautiful locations with thoughtful reflections on the nature of travel and its impact on our lives. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
