The Senator’s Son: Or The Maine Law, A Last Refuge (1853) is a novel written by Metta Victoria Fuller. The story follows the life of a young man named Robert, the son of a senator, who becomes addicted to alcohol and falls into a life of debauchery. His mother, a devout Christian, is determined to save him from his destructive habits and enlists the help of a temperance advocate named Mrs. Graham.Mrs. Graham convinces Robert to sign the pledge to abstain from alcohol and introduces him to the Maine Law, a set of strict laws that prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol. Robert becomes a fervent supporter of the Maine Law and joins the temperance movement, much to the dismay of his father and his wealthy friends. As Robert becomes more involved in the temperance movement, he faces opposition and persecution from those who profit from the sale of alcohol. He also falls in love with Mrs. Graham’s daughter, Mary, who shares his passion for temperance. The Senator’s Son: Or The Maine Law, A Last Refuge is a powerful novel that explores the destructive effects of alcohol and the importance of temperance. It also sheds light on the political and social climate of the mid-19th century, when the temperance movement was gaining momentum in the United States.A Story Dedicated To The Lawmakers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
