Thrust of this book is toacquaint the reader with the obstacles overcome by a state whose past standingthroughout the South and some of the northern sites had deteriorated fromhaving over 40 SCV camps and 4 MOSB chapters to, by 1978, five camps and no activeMOSB chapters. Under the leadership of Commander KH Bailey, his top adjutant Ray Hendrix and other carefully chosen staff members and somenew camp commanders, the number of SCV Camps increased by 1986 to over 500members in eleven camps. The MOSB Â chapters increased from 0 to 3. Thisincrease in strength would have meant little in itself but what did thesehardworking Tarheels accomplish during these nineyears, 1977-1986? They hosted the first National SCV-MOSB Convention in NC in1979, fifty years since the previous one in Charlottein 1929! Long overdue was a monument to the Tarheelskilled at the Battle of Bentonville in 1865. There were monuments to ALLConfederates killed and another one for the Texaskilled. We 'resurgents' built such a memorial. Readon for further outstanding contributions by these talented, hard charging Tarheels.Â
