The Pursuit Of Knowledge Under Difficulties

Grit, curiosity, and a stubborn refusal to quit. Hard-won learning changes everything, forever. In The Pursuit Of Knowledge Under Difficulties (Volume II), George L. Craik gathers an illustrated biography collection of men who fought for education when money, circumstance, or prejudice stood in the way. Part inspirational memoir anthology, part classic moral essays, these intellectual achievement biographies show how self-education and perseverance can turn cramped beginnings into public influence, and how overcoming adversity through learning reshapes a life from the inside out.Rooted in 19th century Britain and the moral atmosphere of Victorian era England, Craik writes in the tradition later popularised by Samuel Smiles self-help: practical virtue, disciplined study, and the dignity of work. The result is one of the Victorian self-improvement classics, offering moral instruction for youth without sermonising, and rich context for adult readers who enjoy the human stories behind science, letters, and public service. It also makes superb homeschool history reading, pairing character-driven narrative with a period sense of what education meant when books were scarce and time was dear.Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today’s and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector’s item and a cultural treasure. Whether you read for encouragement, historical colour, or a handsome classic to keep, this volume rewards attention with courage, clarity, and enduring respect for the life of the mind.
