For most people, the origin of the Posse Comitatus Act is misunderstood. Posse comitatus, a tradition dating back to 13th century England, originates with the medieval practice of summoning a group of able bodied men to assist the King’s sheriff in pursuing lawbreakers. A Latin term, posse comitatus translates to the 'power of the county.'
