The Non-Neutrality of Culture challenges the familiar idea that culture is a neutral and autonomous sphere of human life. Drawing on anthropology, sociology, and critical theory, this study examines culture as a structured system of meaning shaped by belief, values, history, and power, with religion emerging as a significant organizing force.Through the everyday practices of food and dress, the book shows how belief becomes lived practice-shaping ideas of purity, morality, modesty, identity, belonging, and social boundaries. It further explores how colonialism, globalization, secularism, and cultural imposition can present particular value systems as universal or neutral. At the same time, the study avoids reducing culture entirely to religion, recognizing the roles of individual agency, globalization, and multiple intersecting influences. Ultimately, the book invites readers to look beneath the visible surface of culture and critically examine the beliefs and power structures that shape how people live, think, and make sense of the world.
