The Net is a novel written by Rex E. Beach. The story is set in the early 1900s and revolves around a young man named Curtis Jadwin who is a successful wheat speculator in Chicago. Jadwin is ambitious and driven, and he is determined to make a fortune in the wheat market. He is also deeply in love with his wife, Laura, and he will do anything to provide for her. However, Jadwin’s obsession with making money leads him down a dangerous path. He becomes involved in a scheme to corner the wheat market, which could potentially make him a fortune but could also ruin him financially. As Jadwin becomes more and more consumed by his ambition, he begins to neglect his wife and their marriage begins to suffer.Meanwhile, Laura becomes increasingly disillusioned with her husband’s behavior and begins to question their marriage. She finds solace in the company of a young artist named Sheldon Corthell, who is also in love with her. As Jadwin’s scheme to corner the wheat market begins to unravel, he is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and the damage he has done to his marriage. The Net is a gripping story of ambition, love, and betrayal set against the backdrop of the wheat market in Chicago. It is a timeless tale that explores the dangers of unchecked ambition and the importance of love and loyalty in our lives.1912. Rex Beach was well on his way to becoming a lawyer when he was hit by Gold Rush Fever and left for the Klondike to strike it rich. He never found gold, but his travels had sparked his imagination and he began to write. His tales of adventures quickly made him into a popular author. The Net begins: The train from Palermo was late. Already long, shadowy fingers were reaching down the valleys across which the railroad track meandered. Far to the left, out of an opalescent sea, rose the fairy-like Lipari Islands, and in the farthest distance Stromboli lifted its smoking cone above the horizon. On the landward side of the train, as it reeled and squealed along its tortuous course, were gray and gold Sicilian villages perched high against the hills or drowsing among fields of artichoke and sumac and prickly pear.
