The Merry Devil of Edmonton

Mist hangs over the edge of Edmonton, where laughter and suspicion twist through moonlit hedges, and the line between truth and mischief blurs with every whispered rumour. In the charged air of the Elizabethan stage, mistaken identity and quick-witted schemes set the pace for a comedy that dances between shadow and delight. Here, the bustling world of early modern theatre comes alive, capturing the spirit of English renaissance drama at its most playful and unpredictable. Audiences are drawn into a tapestry of lively characters and sharp exchanges, where the conventions of elizabethan comedy are both celebrated and gently mocked, and nothing is ever quite as it seems. This is a work that stands apart for its sly humour and deft manipulation of expectation, offering a glimpse into the social intrigues and theatrical bravado that defined the English play of the 1600s. The dialogue crackles with wit, the plot weaves through layers of deception, and every scene pulses with the restless energy of the comedic stage play at its peak. For lovers of shakespearean comedy and those who savour the intricacies of historical english drama, the play remains a source of fascination-not only for its laughter, but for the way it captures the anxieties and amusements of its era with such immediacy. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
