این کتاب نخستین اثر از گفتار و قلم یک امام شیعی اسماعیلی است که در طول چهارده قرن گذشته با این حجم و این تفصیل به چاپ رسیده است. چنین سند مکتوبی در تاریخ اسماعیلیان بی‌سابقه است.سلطان محمدشاه ملقب به آقاخان سوم، نزدیک به هفتاد و دو سال (۱۸۸۵-۱۹۵۷) امام شیعیان اسماعیلی بود. او در روزگاری که جهان شاهد دو جنگ جهانی، همه‌گیری طاعون و پیشرفت‌های سریع در حوزه‌های دانش و تکنولوژی و شکل‌گیری دولت ملت‌ها بود، نقش و نظر داشته است. در دوران امامت آقاخان سوم، امامت اسماعیلی یک روند تدریجی به سوی نهادسازی و همگام با پیشرفت‌های جهان معاصر پیمود. امروزه، امامت شیعی اسماعیلی به عنوان یک نهاد فراملی دارای شناخت جهانی است و مسند امامت، دیوان امامت اسماعیلی، در کشور پرتغال مستقر و از تشریفات و رسمیات دیپلماتیک برخوردار است.مطالعه‌ی این کتاب تاریخی و مهم، نه تنها برای فهم تاریخ مسلمانان شیعی اسماعیلی و سرگذشت امام سلطان محمدشاه، بلکه برای شناخت بهتر نهاد امامت، فعالیت‌های بین‌المللی و وجهه و شناخت جهانی امامت اسماعیلی اهمیت دارد.
