The Life of St. Samson of Dol

'The Life of St. Samson of Dol' is a significant hagiographical work that provides a detailed account of one of the most important Celtic saints of the sixth century. As one of the seven founder saints of Brittany, Samson’s journey from his origins in Wales to his influential missionary work in Cornwall and Armorica marks a pivotal era in the spread of Christianity across the northern reaches of post-Roman Europe. This scholarly translation and study by Thomas Taylor explores the historical and spiritual legacy of St. Samson, drawing from the earliest Latin manuscripts. The text sheds light on the monastic traditions of the time, the ecclesiastical structures of the early church, and the cultural interconnectedness between Britain and the continent during the early Middle Ages. Readers will find a compelling narrative of devotion, miracles, and the arduous task of establishing monastic foundations in a landscape of shifting political and religious allegiances.Essential for students of medieval history and Celtic spirituality, this work remains a vital source for understanding the development of the Breton church and the enduring influence of the Insular saints. It offers a window into the life of a figure who bridged the gap between the traditions of the British Isles and the burgeoning identity of medieval Brittany. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
