The Lengthened Shadow

'The Lengthened Shadow' is a compelling drama of character and inheritance from the celebrated novelist William John Locke. The story centers on the unusual will of the late Joseph Grantham, which leaves his immense fortune to his beautiful niece, Suzanne, under the joint guardianship of two drastically different men: the sophisticated, worldly banker Peter Moordius and the humble, unassuming Timothy Swayne. As Suzanne navigates her new life, she finds herself caught between these two contrasting figures, each casting a long shadow over her future and her heart. Locke masterfully explores themes of greed, morality, and the hidden depths of the human soul. Set against the backdrop of post-war Europe, the narrative unfolds with the wit and psychological insight characteristic of Locke’s popular works. As the true nature of the suave Moordius is gradually revealed, the novel transforms into a gripping study of the struggle between surface elegance and internal integrity. 'The Lengthened Shadow' remains a classic example of early twentieth-century fiction, offering readers a sophisticated blend of romance, intrigue, and social commentary that captures the shifting values of its era. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
