''The Fisher Maiden'' is a novel written by the Norwegian author Bjornstjerne Bjornson and first published in 1882. The story follows the life of a young woman named Mari, who lives in a small fishing village on the coast of Norway. Mari is known for her beauty and her skill as a fisherman, and she is courted by many of the young men in the village. However, Mari is not interested in any of them and instead dreams of a life beyond the village. When a wealthy man named Tore moves to the village, Mari catches his eye and he begins to court her. Mari is initially hesitant, but she eventually agrees to marry him and move to the city with him. However, Mari soon realizes that Tore is not the man she thought he was and she begins to long for the simple life she left behind. She also discovers that Tore has a dark secret that threatens to destroy their marriage.''The Fisher Maiden'' is a story about love, ambition, and the search for happiness. It explores the tension between tradition and modernity, and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society. Bjornson’s vivid descriptions of the Norwegian landscape and the lives of the fishermen and farmers who inhabit it provide a rich backdrop for the story. The novel is considered a classic of Norwegian literature and has been translated into many languages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
