The Company’s Servant: A Romance of Southern India is a novel written by Bithia Mary Croker and published in 1907. The story is set in colonial India and revolves around the life of a young Englishwoman named Maud Davenant, who travels to India to join her father, a civil servant in the East India Company. Maud is an independent and strong-willed woman who is determined to make a life for herself in India. She is initially taken aback by the stark differences between her home in England and the exotic and unfamiliar land of India. However, she soon adapts to her new surroundings and begins to enjoy the vibrant and colorful culture of the country. As Maud settles into her new life, she meets a young Indian man named Rama Rao, who works as a servant in her father’s household. Despite the differences in their social status and cultural backgrounds, Maud and Rama develop a deep and meaningful relationship that transcends traditional boundaries. However, their love is not without its challenges. Maud’s father disapproves of their relationship and tries to keep them apart. In addition, Rama’s family is opposed to their union, and Maud must navigate the complex social and cultural norms of Indian society to be with the man she loves. The Company’s Servant is a poignant and romantic tale of love and cultural differences set against the backdrop of colonial India. Croker’s vivid descriptions of the Indian landscape and culture provide a rich and immersive reading experience, while her portrayal of the complex relationships between the British colonial rulers and the Indian people offers a thought-provoking glimpse into a fascinating period of history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
