On the morning of March 4, 1908, Lake View School in Collinwood, Ohio, was filled with the ordinary sounds of children reciting lessons - until smoke began to rise from the basement. Within minutes, a small fire turned a proud new school into a death trap. At a single rear exit, hundreds of children surged toward safety and found only darkness, heat, and an unyielding bottleneck. By the time the fire was over, 172 people were dead. The Collinwood Fire recreates that day with gripping immediacy, from the immigrant village that built the school in hope to the principal sounding the gong, the janitor racing toward the flames, and teachers who stayed with their students to the end. As the corridors filled, order gave way to panic; as rescuers shattered windows with bare hands, the whole community collided with catastrophe. Then came the reckoning: the inquest, the fight over who was responsible, and the unsettling truth that no single villain had built this disaster. This is narrative history at its most vivid and devastating: deeply researched, scrupulously grounded, and driven by the lives of the people inside the story. It is also the story of how one of America’s worst school disasters changed the architecture of survival itself. After this book, you will never look at a school door - or a fire drill - the same way again.
