The Cobler of Preston is a novel written by Charles Johnson and published in 1716. The story follows the life of a cobbler named Robin, who lives in the town of Preston in Lancashire, England. Robin is a hardworking and honest man, but he is also poor and struggling to make ends meet. One day, Robin is visited by a group of fairies who offer him a magical gift: the ability to see into the future. Using this gift, Robin is able to predict the outcome of various events and becomes famous throughout the town. However, Robin’s newfound fame and fortune also bring him enemies, including a group of jealous townspeople who accuse him of witchcraft. Robin is forced to flee the town and seek refuge in the nearby city of Manchester. In Manchester, Robin meets a wealthy merchant who takes him under his wing and helps him establish a successful business. Robin also falls in love with the merchant’s daughter, but their relationship is threatened by the merchant’s disapproval and the return of Robin’s enemies from Preston.Throughout the novel, Johnson explores themes of class, wealth, and the supernatural, while also offering a glimpse into life in 18th century England. The Cobler of Preston is considered a classic of English literature and has been praised for its humor, imagination, and social commentary. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
