The Amending of Life

'The Amending of Life' is a profound spiritual treatise written by the celebrated 14th-century English mystic Richard Rolle. This classic work of Christian mysticism serves as an essential guide for those seeking to turn away from worldly distractions and devote themselves entirely to the love of God. Rolle outlines a transformative journey through twelve distinct chapters, addressing the necessary stages of spiritual growth, including conversion, poverty, and the imitation of Christ.Known for his emotive and lyrical prose, Rolle emphasizes the personal and sensory experience of divine love, often describing the ’heat, sweetness, and song’ that characterize the soul’s union with the Creator. The text provides practical and meditative advice on overcoming temptation, practicing patience, and cultivating a disciplined life of prayer. As one of the most widely read devotional works of the Middle Ages, 'The Amending of Life' continues to offer timeless wisdom for modern readers interested in medieval theology, the history of mysticism, and the pursuit of a deep, contemplative interior life. This work stands as a testament to the enduring human desire for spiritual renewal and the search for peace within the divine presence. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
