Selected Works of Richard Rolle, Hermit

'Selected Works of Richard Rolle, Hermit' is a cornerstone collection of writings by one of the preeminent English mystics of the fourteenth century. As a lay hermit and spiritual guide, Richard Rolle developed a unique voice in medieval literature, characterized by his intense focus on the sensory experiences of divine love-specifically the 'heat, song, and sweetness' that defined his mystical journey. This volume brings together a range of his influential works, including prose treatises and spiritual instruction, which offer a window into the contemplative traditions of late medieval England.Rolle’s writings are celebrated for their lyrical beauty and their accessibility, moving beyond formal scholasticism to speak directly to the soul’s desire for union with God. His influence on Middle English prose and the development of English spirituality cannot be overstated. This collection serves as an essential resource for those interested in medieval theology, Christian mysticism, and the history of the English language. Through these texts, readers can explore the profound asceticism and joyous devotion that made Rolle a beloved figure in his own time and a lasting influence on subsequent generations of seekers. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
