Primary health care is an exciting and fulfilling area for nurses to work in. The opportunities to grow long-term relationships with patients, to help people manage their health within their own communities, not to mention that primary health care is constantly evolving and offers opportunities to work in a wide variety of settings, and to collaborate with a host of other health and social care providers. Nursing roles across primary health care can differ depending on the position, the population, the team composition and the knowledge, skills and confidence of the individual nurse. Common responsibilities across primary health care settings may include: Health promotionIllness prevention Midwifery, antenatal and postnatal careTreatment and care of sick people, usually in interdisciplinary teams Rehabilitation and palliation Community development Population health and public health Education Research Advocacy Chronic illness management Organising clinical work environments, including infection control and risk management Providing education and support to other providers such as doctors and administration staff Problem solving in clinical or organisational contexts.
