Este livro analisa as transformações ligadas ao crescimento urbano galopante e as mudanças na organização e gestão do território periurbano, um elo fundamental no processo de desenvolvimento de um país. A horticultura periurbana está a ser minada pela expansão urbana, que corrói e absorve as zonas marginais destinadas ao trabalho da terra. Os grandes campos desapareceram sob o domínio das novas urbanizações. Não existe uma política governamental destinada a estabilizar os horticultores nas zonas periurbanas e a insegurança da posse da terra parece constituir uma desvantagem para a produção de leguminosas. Perante a pressão fundiária, os horticultores ocupam zonas marginais, terrenos não urbanizados, edifícios inacabados, bermas de estradas e esgotos de canais de irrigação. A expansão urbana de Banguise é feita em detrimento da agricultura periurbana, o primeiro grande conflito entre as zonas rurais e urbanas. A agricultura está a desaparecer nas zonas urbanas de Bangui.
