Comme on peut le comprendre à travers la littérature économique existante, les effets des termes de l’échange sur la balance commerciale dépendent de ce qui est communément appelé la condition de Marshall-Lerner stipulant que l’impact en question est lié au fait que la somme des élasticités-prix des exportations et des importations est supérieure à 1. Cet ouvrage est de nature dialectique. Il interroge théoriquement et empiriquement les liens entre les termes de l’échange et les soldes commerciaux globaux d’une manière macroéconomique selon laquelle une appréciation du taux de change réel effectif et une valorisation des termes de l’échange induisent une détérioration des soldes commerciaux globaux, en supposant que les termes de l’échange constituent une bonne mesure des prix relatives en transactions internationales. Et elle traite conceptuellement et empiriquement l’impact des termes de l’échange sur la balance commerciale dans une perspective mésoéconomique, les variables étant cette fois-ci sont mesurées par secteur exportateur ou importateur.
