Os autores assinalaram as desvantagens dos revestimentos de poli(acrilatos de fluoroalquilo) bem conhecidos, que foram amplamente utilizados no passado para proporcionar repelência à água em vestuário para a chuva. Verificou-se que os materiais híbridos orgânicos-inorgânicos hidrofóbicos descritos pelos autores constituem uma alternativa vantajosa aos poli(acrilatos de fluoroalquilo) devido à sua natureza ecológica e toxicológica. São consideradas várias abordagens básicas para melhorar a hidrofobicidade e a super-hidrofobicidade e é analisada a sua aplicabilidade para melhorar as propriedades hidrofóbicas das fibras de algodão, poliéster e poliamida. As perspectivas de utilização de precursores à base de titânio e de silanos orgânicos em processos sol-gel parecem ser as mais realistas em termos de aplicação prática.
