Les auteurs ont souligné les inconvénients des revêtements en poly(acrylate de fluoroalkyle) bien connus qui étaient largement utilisés dans le passé pour rendre les vêtements de pluie hydrofuges. Les matériaux hybrides organiques-inorganiques hydrophobes décrits par les auteurs constituent une alternative avantageuse aux poly(acrylates de fluoroalkyle) en raison de leur nature respectueuse de l’environnement et de la toxicologie. Plusieurs approches de base visant à améliorer l’hydrophobie et la superhydrophobie sont examinées et leur applicabilité pour améliorer les propriétés hydrophobes des fibres de coton, de polyester et de polyamide est analysée. Les perspectives d’utilisation de précurseurs à base de titane et de silanes organiques dans des processus sol-gel semblent les plus réalistes en termes d’application pratique.
