Konwencjonalne doustne systemy dostarczania leków często napotykają ograniczenia, takie jak metabolizm wątrobowy pierwszego przejścia, degradacja enzymatyczna i zmienne wchłanianie z przewodu pokarmowego, które zmniejszają biodostępność leku i skuteczność terapeutyczną. Aby sprostać tym wyzwaniom, w badaniu zbadano mukoadhezyjne policzkowe systemy dostarczania leków (MBDS) jako alternatywną drogę ogólnoustrojowego dostarczania leków. Droga policzkowa oferuje kilka zalet, w tym bezpośrednie wchłanianie przez błonę śluzową policzka, unikanie metabolizmu pierwszego przejścia, szybki początek działania i lepszą zgodność z pacjentem. W niniejszej pracy opracowano mukoadhezyjne tabletki podpoliczkowe siarczanu terbutaliny przy użyciu odpowiednich polimerów, w szczególności polimerów naturalnych, takich jak guma guar, w celu zwiększenia przyczepności i podtrzymania uwalniania leku. Proces formulacji obejmował optymalizację stężenia polimeru w celu osiągnięcia pożądanego zachowania pęcznienia, siły mukoadhezji i kontrolowanego uwalniania leku.
