Depuis quelque temps déjà, de multiples efforts sont déployés pour développer un guide optimal destiné aux personnes malvoyantes et aveugles afin de faciliter leur mobilité spatiale. L’accent est mis sur les affichages auditifs et leur utilisation, qui sont déjà utilisés depuis des décennies dans des interfaces utilisateur innovantes et font l’objet de nombreuses recherches. Dans le cadre du projet OIWOB, un prototype de système d’assistance destiné aux usagers aveugles et malvoyants a été développé. Il permet de détecter les obstacles importants et de les signaler à l’utilisateur par des signaux audio. Dans le cadre de la présente étude, une méthode de sonification a été conçue, mise en œuvre et évaluée à l’aide de tests auditifs pour le prototype susmentionné. Sur la base de neuf classes d’objets issues d’une étude précédente, différents sons ont été générés à l’aide d’une synthèse sonore par modulation de fréquence. Sept d’entre eux ont été testés lors d’essais auditifs avec vingt participants à l’aide d’un simulateur auditif avec auralisation dynamique.
