Hydrazony i ich pochodne stanowią wszechstronną klasę związków w chemii organicznej. Związki te mają interesujące właściwości biologiczne, takie jak działanie przeciwzapalne, przeciwbólowe, przeciwdrgawkowe, przeciwgruźlicze, przeciwnowotworowe, przeciw HIV i przeciwbakteryjne. Hydrazony są ważnymi związkami w projektowaniu leków, jako potencjalne ligandy dla kompleksów metalowych, katalizie organicznej, a także w syntezie związków heterocyklicznych. Przygotowanie, zwiększona stabilność hydrolityczna w stosunku do imin oraz tendencja do krystalizacji to pożądane cechy hydrazonów. Ze względu na te pozytywne właściwości hydrazony są od dawna przedmiotem badań, ale większość ich podstawowej chemii pozostaje niezbadana. Hydrazony zawierają dwa połączone atomy azotu o różnym charakterze oraz podwójne wiązanie C-N, które jest sprzężone z samotną parą elektronów końcowego atomu azotu. Te fragmenty strukturalne są głównymi czynnikami odpowiedzialnymi za właściwości fizyczne i chemiczne hydrazonów. Oba atomy azotu grupy hydrazonowej są nukleofilowe, chociaż azot typu aminowego jest bardziej reaktywny. Atom węgla grupy hydrazonowej ma zarówno właściwości elektrofilowe, jak i nukleofilowe.
