In der Schwangerschaftsanamnese sollten alle Krankheiten, Umwelteinflüsse, Medikamente und der Konsum illegaler Drogen sowie alle Komplikationen chronischer Erkrankungen (z. B. Schwangerschaftsdiabetes) erfasst werden. Das Erfassen sowohl größerer struktureller Defekte als auch kleinerer dysmorpher Merkmale kann helfen, eine einheitliche Diagnose zu stellen. Geburtsfehler können isoliert oder als Teil einer Reihe von Merkmalen auftreten, die nach der embryologischen Ätiologie in die folgenden Gruppen unterteilt werden können: Syndrom, Sequenz, Deformation, Missbildung, Dysplasie und Störung.
