In Eastwood wurde vor dem 11. September 1885 kein so großer Schriftsteller, Philosoph oder Literaturwissenschaftler geboren wie D.H. Lawrence. Er ist der Sohn eines unharmonischen Paares, John Arthur Lawrence und Lydia Beardsall. Die Disharmonie des Ehepaars Lawrence lag darin begründet, dass sie beide zwei verschiedenen Klassen angehörten. John Arthur Lawrence gehört der Arbeiterklasse an, die der obligatorischen staatlichen „Erziehung' entgeht. Sein ganzes Leben besteht aus harter Arbeit in der Kohlengrube, Trinken und manchmal langen Spaziergängen mit seinen Kumpels. Lydia Beardsall war eine gebildete, schöne Frau, später wurde sie Hilfslehrerin, sie interessierte sich für das Lesen und Schreiben von Gedichten, und sie stritt sich mit einigen gebildeten Männern über Religion, Philosophie oder Politik. Sie war also der Grund für die Erziehung ihrer Kinder. Trotz regelmäßiger interner Streitigkeiten und Auseinandersetzungen brachte sie fünf Kinder zur Welt: George Arthur, William Ernest, Emily, David Herbert und Ada. Trotz seiner frühen gesundheitlichen Schwäche als Kind liebt er das Forschen. Schon als sehr kleiner Junge wurde er ein sehr bekannter Schriftsteller.
