In turbulant 1860 Jamie Cavaungh was a laborer in Pammy Ward’s father’s store. There were sparks when they first saw each other but her father would not allow it. She was just beginning to court a widowed doctor. Pammy has doubts about her love for the doctor or is it just security. When war broke out between the states Jamie enlisted in the Irish Brigade, the 69th New York, promising her he would write. Her father intercepted the letters. She wondered what had happened to him. Was she out of sight, out of mind? Was he killed?Jamie wondered she had not written back. Was she engaged to the doctor? Was she married? Pammy began volunteering in a soldiers hospital with her doctor friend. It was there they would meet again. President Lincoln would play an important part in getting them back together again.
