Il 16 e 17 giugno 2013, una catastrofe naturale caratterizzata da piogge torrenziali e conseguenti inondazioni improvvise ha provocato il peggior disastro nella regione di Kedarnath, nell’Uttarakhand. Questa regione è geomorfologicamente vulnerabile e tettonicamente attiva, il che la rende fragile e soggetta a catastrofi. Le attività antropiche che causano cambiamenti nell’uso del suolo, nella copertura del suolo, nel drenaggio, nell’edilizia non pianificata, nel turismo non regolamentato, ecc. hanno contribuito ad aumentare l’impatto di questo disastro. Le precipitazioni continue dei giorni precedenti al 16 giugno 2013 si sono accumulate, ma l’improvviso aumento delle precipitazioni durante il 16-17 giugno 2013 ha causato una massiccia inondazione dei fiumi. La perdita di vite umane, la distruzione delle infrastrutture e delle proprietà e la devastazione incalcolabile dell’ecologia della regione hanno fatto sì che il disastro fosse considerato uno dei peggiori che l’India abbia affrontato dopo lo tsunami del dicembre 2004. L’evento è stato associato a precipitazioni di alta intensità che hanno causato un’inondazione improvvisa che ha portato a una colata detritica, depositi di sedimenti, blocchi, scioglimento dei ghiacciai e diverse frane. La maggior parte degli studi relativi al disastro si basano su aspetti geomorfologici e idrologici, ma il presente studio si concentra sull’aspetto meteorologico.
