L’ansia da esame è un tipo di auto-preoccupazione mentale caratterizzata da un 'concetto di sé' debole e da dubbi sulle proprie capacità, ed è spesso associata a cognizione negativa, mancanza di concentrazione, reazioni fisiche avverse e insuccesso accademico. In altre parole, quando una persona è preoccupata e incoraggiata circa la sua efficienza e capacità mentale nella situazione d’esame, tanto che questa sensazione provoca una diminuzione del suo rendimento effettivo. Si dice che ha l’ansia da esame. Una combinazione di fattori individuali, scolastici, familiari e culturali può giocare un ruolo nell’insorgere dell’ansia da esame. In situazioni di stress, come prima e durante l’esame, il corpo rilascia un ormone chiamato 'adrenalina'. Questo fa sì che l’organismo si trovi in modalità di risposta 'combatti o fuggi' e si prepari ad affrontare ciò che sta per accadere. In molti casi l’adrenalina è una buona cosa, perché aiuta ad assicurarsi di essere vigili e pronti ad affrontare efficacemente le situazioni di stress.
