Die Transnationalitätsforschung zeigt, dass grenzüberschreitende Bezüge im Kontext von Migration alltäglich sind. Dies stellt Konzeptionen der sozialen Unterstützungsforschung von Gemeinschaft als territorial eng umgrenzte Einheiten in Frage. Auf der Basis einer Online-Befragung mit deutschen MigrantInnen in Großbritannien zeigt die netzwerkanalytische Studie, dass soziale Unterstützung nicht nur durch das räumlich unmittelbare Umfeld geleistet wird. Persönliche Beziehungsgeflechte vermitteln transnational Rückhalt, Beistand und Versorgung, ebenso wie sie auch Konflikte bergen können. Andreas Herz differenziert personal communities in ihrer transnationalen Struktur(ierung) und analysiert, wie sie über relationale und strukturelle Merkmale soziale Unterstützung herstellen. Entgegen gängiger Konzeptionen sind vielmehr Beziehungsaspekte und weniger strukturelle Aspekte von personal communities als Konstituenten alltäglicher Hilfen im Kontext von Migration zu betrachten.
