'Streitbare Demokratie' - dieser Begriff umschreibt ein verfassungsrechtliches, demokratietheoretisches und institutionelles Instrumentarium, mit dem der demokratische Verfassungsstaat sich gegen politischen Extremismus zur Wehr setzt. Untersucht werden Theorie und Praxis dieser Doktrin in der Bundesrepublik nach 1945 auf den Ebenen der wissenschaftlichen Debatte, der Institutionen - Verfassungsschutz, politische Justiz, Parteien, politische Bildung -und der öffentlichen Diskurse am Beispiel des 'deutschen Herbstes' 1977 und des 'Historikerstreits'. Ergebnis: Symbolische und rituelle Ausgrenzungen haben mehr und mehr die eigentlich notwendige geistig-politische Auseinandersetzung ersetzt.
