Stella Mattutina, del 1921 è nei fatti un romanzo-autobiografico della stessa Autrice. Pieno zeppa di ricordi, basati principalmente sui dialoghi con la madre. La Negri passò l’infanzia nella portineria del palazzo dove la nonna, Peppina Panni, lavorava come custode presso la nobile famiglia Barni, legata un tempo al celebre mezzosoprano Giuditta Grisi, fino alla morte della quale era stata governante la nonna Peppina.Sul rapporto tra la Grisi e la sua famiglia, Ada costruirà il mito della propria infanzia. Anche se nei fatti un vero rapporto non vi fu mai e Ada che passava molto tempo sola nei locali della portineria, osserva per lo più il via vai di questa élite di persone da una certa distanza.Quindi Dinin la protagonista altri non è che Ada. Dinin che esplora il mondo con il visibile, ama anche con l’invisibile, in chiave spesso quasi onirica e trasfigurata.Affascinanti le immagini “botaniche” che ben rimandano a quegli anni di art noveau, fatti di atmosfere idilliache e profumi immaginari che tanto sarebbero piaciuti a Matisse e Monet. Ma il contenuto non è solo estetico ed estatico, Ada Negri passa presto a raccontare anche difficoltà e miserie, soprusi e drammi sociali, travalicando con abilità e arte l’esperienza autobiografica, per assumere un valore sociale universale. Tutti particolari e prerogative che rendono questo romanzo del primo novecento assai moderno e storiografico.Quando uscì, nel 1921, “Stella mattutina” ebbe un successo enorme che consolidò una volta di più la sua autrice. Piacque per la sua adesione al genere autobiografico che la individuava tipicamente, e piacque anche lo sforzo dell’autrice di illustrare con coraggio la situazione femminile di quegli anni in Italia.  3
