Heutzutage ist das Verstecken geheimer Nachrichten in digitalen Bildern die am weitesten verbreitete und am häufigsten verwendete Technik. Sie nutzt die Schwächen des menschlichen Sehsystems (HVS) aus. Es gibt eine große Auswahl an Ansätzen zum Verstecken von Informationen in Bildern. Die Forschung zur Entwicklung robuster steganografischer Verfahren und Steganalyse-Techniken ist ein fortlaufender Prozess. Die PVD-Steganografie (Pixel Value Differencing) bettet geheime Daten auf der Grundlage der Unterschiede zwischen benachbarten Pixeln in Bilder ein. Bei den Steganografieverfahren „Pixel Value Differencing' und „Tri Pixel Value Differencing' (TPVD) werden die Daten in 2×2-Quadratblöcken versteckt. Die PVD- und TPVD-Verfahren sind anfällig für histogrammbasierte Angriffe. Beim STARPVD-Ansatz werden 3×3-Pixelblöcke verwendet. Dadurch entstehen acht Pixelpaare. Daher lassen sich mit diesem Ansatz mehr Daten bei besserer visueller Qualität und höherer Sicherheit verbergen.
