Il libro si propone di esaminare il lavoro missionario del XIX e XX secolo a Bakossi, in Camerun, con l’obiettivo di mettere in discussione l’essenza e l’impatto degli approcci egemonici e suprematisti adottati per evangelizzare la società. Tali approcci avrebbero sostenuto e condotto con successo alla distruzione delle forme indigene di spiritualità, regolamentazione socio-culturale e organizzazione politica. Con il rinnovato interesse della ricerca per il valore dei sistemi di culto e della spiritualità indigena africana nella regolazione sociale e il loro potenziale significato nel mercato globale, il libro cerca di mettere in discussione l’impegno missionario finora glorificato di evangelizzare un popolo sulla base del concetto di 'civilizzare pagani e selvaggi'. Il libro sostiene che è necessario chiedersi se la società africana fosse diversa dal quadro dipinto nell’Europa del XIX secolo; se una conoscenza approfondita delle società africane da parte dei missionari avrebbe potuto ispirare forme alternative di percezione e interazione con le società africane e, soprattutto, se un approccio diverso all’evangelizzazione da parte dei primi missionari avrebbe portato a risultati alternativi vantaggiosi sia per il cristianesimo che per gli africani.
