This thesis focuses on the use of music therapy in the spiritual support of palliative care patients. The initial hypothesis is that in the highly destabilizing conditions of the end of life, music therapy allows patients to connect with an inner space of well-being and an experience profound enough to reveal the uniqueness of their existence. In the Western world, and in France in particular, the repression of spirituality leads many people to spiritual distress. I have observed that music therapy allows many patients to access their deep inner selves. This has awakened feelings of joy or well-being, and some have been able to experience contemplative or even ecstatic states. It can take the form of a rite of passage that helps the person reach other dimensions of their being. Music therapy seems particularly well suited to modern secular society and can respond to the great suffering experienced by people without religious affiliation, making spiritual support more accessible to them.
