Insbesondere für die Bildungsforschung verspricht die soziale Netzwerkanalyse neue Erkenntnisse, da sie die wechselseitige Abhängigkeit von Akteuren innerhalb sozialer Settings berücksichtigt. Dennoch mangelt es in den Erziehungs- und Bildungswissenschaften derzeit noch an einschlägigen empirischen Arbeiten. Im vorliegenden Sonderheft der Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissenschaft werden empirische Studien präsentiert, die qualitative und quantitative Verfahren der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse einsetzen und aktuelle Forschungsfragen auf der Mikro-, Meso- und Makro-Ebene der Bildungsforschung und Bildungspolitik beantworten. Darüber hinaus werden konzeptuelle Fragen der Anwendbarkeit des sozialen Netzwerkansatzes in der Bildungsforschung diskutiert.
