Every Boxing Day, a fleet leaves the brilliance of Sydney Harbour and turns south towards one of the most demanding passages in international sailing. South to Hobart tells the complete story of Australia’s great ocean-racing tradition, from the informal challenge that produced the first race in 1945 to the carbon-fibre supermaxis, two-handed crews and advanced safety systems of the modern era. It follows the yachts, designers, navigators and ordinary club sailors who transformed a post-war cruise into a celebrated test of speed, endurance and judgement. Across 628 nautical miles, competitors must negotiate the shifting East Australian Current, the exposed waters of Bass Strait, Tasmania’s formidable eastern coast and the notoriously unpredictable River Derwent. The course has produced record-breaking passages, seven-second finishes, international rivalries and remarkable corrected-time victories by smaller boats. It has also produced tragedy-most notably the catastrophic storm of 1998, whose six deaths and vast rescue operation permanently changed offshore racing safety. From timber cutters and legendary handicap winners to Kialoa III, Wild Oats XI, Comanche and the rise of two-handed competition, this independent narrative history explores how yacht design, rating rules, professionalism, weather forecasting and seamanship reshaped the race without diminishing its essential uncertainty. Comprehensive, accessible and grounded in documented history, South to Hobart is the story of a race whose course remains constant but whose challenge is recreated by the sea every year.
