The silicon solar cell was invented approximately 70 years ago. Initially low, silicon solar cells’ energy conversion efficiency has nearly achieved its theoretical maximum. Additionally, because of advancements in grid connection technology for solar cells, the cost of silicon solar cells has decreased, and solar cells have been installed on residential rooftops and Mega solar power plants. In the introductory part we provide the reader with some general facts on energy such as summary of the current status of PV in the world. The book aims to cover all the topics which provide a broad overview on the different aspects of Solar Energy with a focus on photovoltaics which is the technology that allows to convert energy transported in light directly into electrical energy. Solar energy is an Inexhaustible resource, eco-friendly and is one of the cleanest energy sources. Our planet receives enormous amounts of solar energy each day from the sun. This book on Solar Cells and their applications delves into the topic of photovoltaic and PV systems and how the development of efficient solar cells and solar panels are beneficial to society at large.
