A angústia sentida pelos pais de crianças com PEA começa logo que se suspeitam os primeiros sinais de alerta, e evolui ao longo do tempo com as exigências dos cuidados à criança e com o ideal parental. Tanto quanto sabemos, a questão do burnout parental, embora recente, tem sido mais amplamente discutida na população em geral e entre os pais de crianças com diabetes e outras doenças crónicas. Poucos estudos foram realizados com pais de crianças com PEA e não existem estudos africanos sobre este assunto. O objetivo deste estudo foi explorar o impacto da perceção do fardo na ocorrência de esgotamento parental em pais de crianças com PEA. Participaram no estudo 52 pais, incluindo 14 pais e 38 mães escolhidos voluntariamente e por conveniência.Os resultados revelaram que 96,15% dos participantes tinham uma perceção baixa da sua capacidade para lidar com o stress; 26,92% tinham uma sintomatologia definida de ansiedade; 19,23% tinham uma sintomatologia definida de depressão; 38,46% tinham uma perturbação de stress pós-traumático e 26,92% tinham burnout parental. Por último, a perceção do fardo está associada ao esgotamento parental.
