Die Not der Eltern von Kindern mit ASD beginnt mit dem Verdacht auf die ersten Warnzeichen des Kindes und entwickelt sich im Laufe der Zeit mit den Anforderungen an die Betreuung des Kindes einerseits und dem elterlichen Ideal andererseits. Nach unserem derzeitigen Wissensstand ist die Problematik des elterlichen Burnouts zwar neu, wurde aber in der Allgemeinbevölkerung und bei Eltern von Kindern mit Diabetes und anderen chronischen Krankheiten stärker thematisiert. Es gibt nur wenige Studien über Eltern von Kindern mit ASD und keine afrikanischen Studien zu diesem Thema. Ziel dieser Studie war es, den Einfluss der wahrgenommenen Belastung auf das Auftreten von elterlichem Burnout bei Eltern von Kindern mit ASD zu untersuchen. 52 Eltern, darunter 14 Väter und 38 Mütter, nahmen freiwillig und nach eigenem Ermessen an der Studie teil.Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass 96,15 % der Teilnehmer ihre Stressbewältigungsfähigkeiten als gering einschätzten, 26,92 % hatten eine eindeutige Angstsymptomatik, 19,23 % hatten eine eindeutige Depressionssymptomatik, 38,46 % hatten eine posttraumatische Belastungsstörung und 26,92 % hatten einen Parent Burnout. Insgesamt steht die wahrgenommene Belastung in Zusammenhang mit dem elterlichen Burnout.
