Toda a produção criativa de St. John Perse traça implicitamente uma evolução estética sem precedentes, através de um processo contínuo de idas e vindas entre diferentes registos literários. No início da sua carreira, foi lírico; mais tarde, tornou-se épico, antes de se fixar definitivamente numa modernidade que valorizava a síntese e abandonava a rutura. De facto, ignorou todas as tendências, formas e origens para acompanhar os tempos: misturou todas as estéticas (romântica, simbolista, surrealista, etc.) e todas as nomenclaturas (biológica, zoológica, botânica, etc.) para demonstrar a sua maturidade, tanto artística como filosófica, num cratylismo que reforçou o hermetismo, dando lugar a uma hibridação estética sem limites. Esta hibridação destruiu as divisões entre os movimentos literários e aboliu as fronteiras entre as Idades e as Línguas da Humanidade.
