Au début de sa carrière, il a été lyrique ; par la suite, il est devenu épique, avant de verser, une fois pour toutes, dans une modernité qui valorise la synthèse et délaisse la rupture. En effet, il a fait flèche de toutes les tendances, formes et fonds confondus, pour s’inscrire dans l’air de son temps : il a brassé toutes les esthétiques (romantique, symboliste, surréaliste...) et toutes les nomenclatures (biologique, zoologique, botanique...) pour témoigner de sa maturité à la fois artistique et philosophique, dans un cratylisme renforçant l’hermétisme, ce qui a donné lieu à une hybridation esthétique sans limite. Laquelle hybridation a détruit les cloisons entres les mouvements littéraires et a aboli les frontières entres les Ages et les Langages de l’Humanité.
