Il sistema nervoso autonomo ha il simpatico (SNS), il parasimpatico (PNS), il sistema nervoso enterico (ENS) che regolano le azioni inconsce del corpo, la risposta di lotta o fuga del corpo, e il corpo per nutrirsi e riprodursi. I segnali del SNS viaggiano attraverso i neuroni pregangliari che rilasciano acetilcolina (ACh), attivando i recettori nicotinici ACh sui neuroni postgangliari che rilasciano norepinefrina che attiva i recettori adrenergici (AR) sui tessuti periferici. SNS: accelerano la frequenza cardiaca; allargano i passaggi bronchiali; diminuiscono la motilità dell’intestino crasso; costringono i vasi sanguigni; aumentano la peristalsi dell’esofago; causano la dilatazione pupillare, la piloerezione come la pelle d’oca, la sudorazione del sudore e aumentano la pressione sanguigna. L’amigdala tramite l’ormone di rilascio della corticotropina, attiva l’asse ipotalamo-ipofisi-surrene. SNS β2 AR sulle cellule CD4+T e B controlla l’immunità. L’immunoterapia è iniziata con la vaccinazione contro il vaiolo, il cancro blocca le risposte immunitarie. Il cervello regola le risposte immunitarie innate e adattative. Il PNS controlla la vescica urinaria, ureteri, sfinteri anali, utero, prostata, ghiandole, vagina, pene. L’ENS, contiene 600 milioni di neuroni. Ci sono vescicole adrenergiche dense nella retina.
