O sistema nervoso autônomo tem simpático (SNS), parassimpático (PNS), sistema nervoso entérico (ENS) que regulam as ações inconscientes do corpo, a luta do corpo ou resposta de vôo, e o corpo para se alimentar e procriar. Os sinais de SNS viajam por neurônios pré-ganglionares que liberam acetilcolina (ACh), ativando receptores nicotínicos ACh em neurônios pós-ganglionares liberando norepinefrina que ativa receptores adrenérgicos (AR) nos tecidos periféricos. SNS: acelerar a frequência cardíaca; alargar as passagens brônquicas; diminuir a motilidade do intestino grosso; estreitar os vasos sanguíneos; aumentar o peristaltismo do esôfago; causar dilatação pupilar, causar arrepios, transpiração e aumentar a pressão sanguínea. A amígdala por corticotropina liberando hormônio, ativa o eixo hipotálamo-hipófise-adrenal. SNS β2 AR em CD4+T e células B controla a imunidade. A imunoterapia começou com a vacinação contra a varíola, o câncer pára as respostas imunológicas. O cérebro regula as respostas imunes inatas e adaptativas. O SNP controla a bexiga urinária, ureteres, esfíncteres anais, útero, próstata, glândulas, vagina, pénis. O ENS, contém 600 milhões de neurónios. Há vesículas adrenérgicas densas na retina.
