I mesogeni sono solidi disordinati o liquidi ordinati perché derivano da uno stato unico della materia che presenta proprietà sia solide che liquide, chiamato stato cristallino liquido. Questo stato cristallino liquido (LC) è chiamato mesofase e si verifica tra lo stato solido cristallino (Cr) e lo stato liquido isotropo (Iso) a intervalli di temperatura distinti. Le proprietà cristalline liquide derivano dal fatto che i composti mesogenici sono costituiti da parti rigide e flessibili, che contribuiscono a caratterizzare l’ordine e la mobilità della loro struttura. I componenti rigidi allineano le frazioni mesogeniche in una direzione e hanno forme distintive che si trovano tipicamente sotto forma di bastoncini o dischi. I segmenti flessibili conferiscono mobilità ai mesogeni perché sono solitamente costituiti da catene alchiliche, che ostacolano in una certa misura la cristallizzazione. La combinazione di catene rigide e flessibili induce l’allineamento strutturale e la fluidità tra le frazioni dei cristalli liquidi.
