Os mesógenos são sólidos desordenados ou líquidos ordenados, pois surgem de um estado único da matéria que exibe propriedades semelhantes às dos sólidos e dos líquidos, chamado estado cristalino líquido. Esse estado cristalino líquido (LC) é chamado de mesofase e ocorre entre o estado sólido cristalino (Cr) e o estado líquido isotrópico (Iso) em faixas de temperatura distintas. As propriedades do cristal líquido surgem porque os compostos mesogénicos são compostos por partes rígidas e flexíveis, que ajudam a caracterizar a ordem e a mobilidade da sua estrutura. Os componentes rígidos alinham as partes mesogénicas numa direção e têm formas distintas que são normalmente encontradas na forma de bastões ou discos. Os segmentos flexíveis proporcionam mobilidade aos mesogénios, porque são geralmente constituídos por cadeias alquílicas, que impedem a cristalização até certo ponto. A combinação de cadeias rígidas e flexíveis induz o alinhamento estrutural e a fluidez entre as partes do cristal líquido.
