Como um dos componentes importantes das pilhas de combustível, o metal precioso Pt é um electrocatalisador altamente eficiente, que tem um grande efeito nas reacções anódicas das pilhas de combustível. No entanto, devido às reduzidas reservas naturais e ao preço exorbitante do metal nobre Pt, estes estrangulamentos continuam a limitar o desenvolvimento prático das pilhas de combustível. Por conseguinte, a dopagem de alguns metais rentáveis (como o Fe, o Ni, etc.) para formar catalisadores à base de Pt, não só pode melhorar a utilização de metais preciosos, mas também aumentar o desempenho catalítico em virtude da liga e dos efeitos sinérgicos. Factores como a composição superficial e a estrutura dos catalisadores obtidos são muito importantes para o desempenho catalítico. Entre eles, os materiais unidimensionais à base de Pt com uma construção relativamente estável e boa condutividade eletrónica, que podem melhorar significativamente os comportamentos catalíticos. Tendo em conta este facto, a engenharia eficaz e a adaptação da estrutura superficial dos materiais à base de Pt, incluindo a construção em rede ou em forma de concha, melhorariam as propriedades catalíticas devido a áreas activas superficiais maiores e a sítios mais reactivos.
